Au Gratin Potatoes

Before you begin

Prep time: 30 minutes
Cook time: 1.5 hours @ 350*F
Yields: one 9 x 9 inch pan

Additional information:
These take a long time in the oven, so throw them in before you start preparing the rest of your meal. Mmmmmmmmm

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp. Butter
  • 3 tbsp. Flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. Salt
  • 1/4 tsp. Pepper
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 5 cups thinly sliced peeled potatoes(about 6 medium)
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350*F. Grease a 9x9" pan. Set aside.

  2. In a large saucepan, melt butter over low heat.

  3. Stir in the flour, salt, and pepper until smooth.

  4. Gradually add milk.

  5. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.

  6. Remove from heat; stir in cheese until melted.

  7. Add potatoes and onion, stir well.

  8. Transfer to prepared pan.

  9. Cover and bake for 1 hour.

  10. Uncover and bake 30-40 minutes longer.

    I really thought there wasn't going to be enough sauce, and that the potatoes were going to burn, but it came out perfectly! These directions are right on!
